DIY Halloween Costume: Spider & Walking Toolbox
Who says your Halloween costume has to come from the costume aisle? With a few supplies, a little imagination, and some DIY know-how, you can build a costume that's just as fun to make as it is to wear. We've put together two creative DIY Halloween costumes—a creepy-crawly spider and a walking toolbox—using materials you can pick up at McCoy's. Grab your supplies, follow the steps, and use our handy patterns to help bring your cardboard Halloween costumes to life.
Spooky Cardboard Spider
Want something spooky? Turn a simple cardboard box and black plastic hose into a giant spider costume that’s ready for Halloween fun.
Supplies Needed
- Black rope or cord
- We used white and spray painted it black
- Black spray paint or acrylic paint and paint brushes
- Glue
- Hot glue works best
- Black corrugated plastic hose
- Small cardboard box
- Scissors and/or box cutter
Spider Steps
- Cut eight pieces of the hose to arm's length.
- Cut the flaps off the cardboard box. The trick-or-treater will wear the box like a backpack with the open top to their back.
- Use the hose to trace four circles on each side of the cardboard box, for a total of eight leg holes.
- See photo for placement
- Have an adult carefully cut out the eight circles.
- Stick the "legs" into each hole and glue down.
- Paint the box black
- Make four holes in the box to tie the string on to wear like a backpack. It's best to cut the length of rope for the size of the person wearing the costume. This will ensure the box sits on the upper back and not sag down.
- To really make your crawly spider, wear black pants and a long-sleeved top. We also made eyes using a ski mask and cutting out circles with white and black paper.
A Walking Toolbox
A fan of projects? Turn a cardboard box into a tool-toting costume that looks like it walked right out of the workshop!
Supplies Needed
- Box big enough to be worn by the trick-or-treater
- Scissors and/or box cutter
- Your choice of paint colors and brushes
- Glue

Toolbox Tutorial
- Have an adult cut the flaps off the box.
- Use the guide to cut the bottom leg hole and the top head hole.
- Using the pattern provided, cut the tools out of the cardboard from the flaps.
- Paint and decorate your toolbox by gluing the tools down!
