McCoy’s and Texas State University
McCoy’s Building Supply moved its headquarters to San Marcos, TX in 1972. In the years since, McCoy’s Building Supply and the McCoy family have developed a close relationship with Texas State University, focused on expanding opportunities for students throughout their academic careers.
Impactful Giving
Texas State’s business school was originally established in 1970, and it officially became the McCoy College of Business in 2004 after Emmett and Miriam McCoy gifted $20 million to the university. At the time, it was the largest single donation in Texas State University history. Through their generosity, the McCoy College of Business Foundation was established to invest and manage donations to the college. Emmett and Miriam McCoy Hall, which opened in 2006, was also named in honor of the couple and their philanthropy.
In a press release at the time of donation, Emmett McCoy, who was retired chairman and chief executive officer of McCoy’s Building Supply, said he hoped the couple’s gift would push business programs at Texas State to new levels of excellence. “We think this gift can make a real difference for the College of Business Administration and will help make it a better college. We believe it can be one of the best in Texas,” he said.
A Legacy of Generosity
Over the past two decades, the McCoy College of Business at Texas State University has stood out for its commitment to academic excellence, innovative programs, and a focus on experiential learning. McCoy’s Building Supply has also connected with the university by hosting interns, giving tours of its corporate headquarters to students and participating in speaking engagements at the university. The company also contributed a $8 million seed gift in March 2022 for the creation of a state-of-the-art Student Success Center in the McCoy College of Business.
In 2024, Emmett and Miriam McCoy were posthumously honored with the 2024 Texas Higher Education Distinguished Service Award for their extraordinary contributions and service to higher education in the state.
“Our family is so honored by this recognition of our parents, Emmett and Miriam McCoy,” Brian McCoy, retired CEO and current Chairman of the Board, said when accepting the award on his parents’ behalf. “While their philanthropy included many domains, they were so excited to be able to support young scholars and deserving faculty at the university level.”
Inspiring the Next Generation
Emmett and Miriam McCoy's legacy of philanthropy continues to inspire and support the next generation of business professionals, equipping them with the tools they need to succeed and make a positive impact on the world. The incredible growth in Central Texas might not have been predicted when McCoy’s Building Supply moved to the area in 1972, but the relationship between McCoy’s and Texas State has had a positive impact throughout the vibrant area.
