Two Companies Team Up to Brighten a Community Beacon

Housed in a building once known as a place where Hispanic youth were discouraged from celebrating their heritage, the Centro Cultural Hispano De San Marcos has turned the former Bonham School into a beacon of pride for the San Marcos community.

Acting as a hub for youth with many culturally enriching programs to educate and entertain residents, the center has garnered great popularity within the community. Built in 1951, the facility had seen better days, and the deteriorating condition of the building’s exterior was a growing concern. McCoy’s Building Supply and longtime partner Devoe Paint created a plan to repaint the building and help bring even more pride to the community. The project was part of Devoe’s “Paint a New Start” program, a community service mission which aims to refresh local structures and landmarks around the country.

The two companies supplied paint and supplies as well as over 500 volunteer hours to complete the resurfacing project. Over the course of a week, the volunteers from Devoe Paint, McCoy’s and other community organizations, came together to paint the building on 211 Lee Street in San Marcos, Texas. The team wrapped up the project on Saturday, June 22 with a celebratory lunch that included representatives from the San Marcos Independent School District and board members of the center.

“As a company, there is no higher honor to be able to donate the time and materials to such a deserving community center,” explains Dan Stauffer, vice president of marketing and real estate for McCoy’s Building Supply. “Programs and activities like the ones held at Centro are pivotal to the future of the youth in our community and we felt that giving them a fresh coat of paint was the very least we could do to give back to them.”

The center is dedicated to the preservation, development, promotion and celebration of Hispanic arts, culture, heritage and values. The center hosts educational programs, music lessons, dance lessons and more for children, adults and families.
