Rattler Alumni Create Resource Chain Among Nonprofits

Several former San Marcos High School graduates showed that Rattler pride is still alive and well when they recently formed a San Marcos High School (SMHS) alumni network to provide free office supplies to area nonprofit organizations.

McCoy’s Building Supply headquarters team had many gently-used office supplies that did not make the move to the building supply retailer’s new corporate headquarters on July 13. McCoy’s marketing analyst Sarah Lohn, a 1996 SMHS graduate, invited nonprofit organizations to pick up supplies to help their organizations. The supplies were a welcomed gift to the groups who routinely stretch their budgets to meet operating goals. 

“We were getting ready to make the move to our new headquarters,” Lohn said. “Some supplies like binders and desk trays weren’t making the trip with us, but we didn’t want to just throw them away. We immediately thought of the San Marcos school district, so I called my friend Daniel Guerrero at the San Marcos Education Foundation (SMEF). He called some other Rattlers who are serving as nonprofit leaders, and before I knew it we had several groups here picking up supplies.”

The San Marcos Education Foundation, Hays/Caldwell Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, United Way of Hays County and the Kyle Area Chamber of Commerce were just a few of the recipients of McCoy’s generosity.

“We are thankful to McCoy’s for their continued support and to Sarah Lohn for reaching out to the network of Rattler alumni,” said SMEF Director Daniel Guerrero, a 1995 SMHS graduate. “Our alumni are always looking for ways to contribute to their community and the Education Foundation is a resource that can help maximize their investment.”

The San Marcos Education Foundation is a nonprofit, tax-exempt corporation dedicated to supporting excellence in education. The Foundation supports the San Marcos CISD with student and teacher recognition activities, innovative teaching grants and scholarships.
